Frederick William WATSON was born in Little Cressingham, Norfolk in 1896 (Swaffham Q3-1896 4B:348). He was the son of Frederick William and Harriet Ann WATSON (née COOKE).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at The Cottage, Watton Road, Carbrooke with his father Fred WATSON [32] yard man on farm, born Saham Toney; his mother Harriet [32] born Lt Cressingham; brother Isaac [10] born Trexton, Norfolk and sisters Florence [7] and Emma [6], both born in Little Cressingham.

1911 census...Aged 14, a bricklayers labourer, he was still at the same place with his parents and brother Isaac (farm labourer)

The family had only moved to Herringswell during the war, presumably why his name is not on the memorial. On the pension form in 1919 his mother recorded that the family, parent, brother Isaac James and sisters Florence and Emma were all at Manor Farm, Herringswell. Florence was now Mrs Chapman.


Enlisted in Norwich
His Army records show that he attested on 22nd November 1915 in the Norfolk Regiment. Giving his age as 20, a farm labourer, 5' 5.252 tall, weighing 110 lbs, chest 40"-43".He was adjudged to need dentures.
He arrived in France at Boulogne on 27th September 1916 and was posted to 8th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment on 29th September 1916 then posted to the 1st Herts before being transferred to the 12th East Yorkshire on 12th October 1916, receiving a new number of 28174.
He joined the 12th Battalion for duty in the field on 14th October and was posted missing on 13th November 1916. Initially he was buried in John Copse British Cemetery No2., near Hebuterne. After the Armistice, 570 graves from these small cemeteries were removed to Euston Road Cemetery.
